The first day of the Goddess Saraswati Puja sometimes referred to as "Saraswati Avahan," takes place during the Navratri festival. The ritual of Saraswati Avahan is conducted in order to invoke the heavenly benefits of Goddess Saraswati. The word "Avahan" means invocation.

The final three days of the lengthy Navratri celebration are mostly used for Saraswati Maa devotion. As per the Hindu calendar, Saraswati Avahan is conducted on the 7th day (Maha Saptami) of the month of Ashwin during Shukla Paksha. As per the traditions, the ritual of Saraswati Avahan should be performed during Mool Nakshatra, while the very Saraswati puja must be conducted during the Purva Ashadha Nakshatra, the Balidan puja at the time of Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra, whereas the Goddess Saraswati's Visarjan during the Shravana Nakshatra. On the day of Vijayadashami, in the Indian states of Maharashtra and some parts of South India, Saraswati Puja concludes by performing the ritual of Saraswati Visarjan.

Significance of Saraswati Avahan

According to Hindu ancient texts, Goddess Saraswati assisted Lords Brahma, Vishnu, and, Shiva in the creation and maintenance of the universe.

Saraswati Avahan's meaning comes from the name of the Goddess Saraswati, and avahan is the term for summons. On this auspicious day, the worshippers invoke Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom and understanding. With the use of Goddess Saraswati's understanding, Lord Brahma created the universe. Rituals during Saraswati Avahan

The Saraswati Avahan lasts for about 5 hours overall and is celebrated during the auspicious muhurta of Mula Nakshatra. The precise timing of Saraswati Avahan, however, could change every year.

  • A specific mantra is sung for the Goddess Saraswati Avahan to evoke her favors. The Goddess is worshipped in this chant, and the followers ask for her protection and direction.
  • A 'Sankalpam' is performed after the ritual of washing Goddess Saraswati's feet as part of the puja. After that, the rite known as "Alankaram" is performed to decorate the goddess' idol with kumkum and Chandan (sandalwood paste). Flowers and incense sticks are often presented to the god.
  • 'Naivedyam', a unique food gift in the Saraswati Avahan, is prepared for the Goddess. The thought that white is her favorite color inspired the creation of all the savory and sweet foods. The naivety is given out as 'prasad' to all worshippers present for the ritual once the Saraswati puja is over. Devotees also sing bhajans in honor of Goddess Saraswati. On this day of Saraswati Avahan, some individuals also observe fasting.
