Pitru Paksha, aka Shraadh, is a period of 16 days during which the people pay respect and homage to their ancestors. This period begins after Ganesh Chaturthi on the 1st full moon and ends on the day of the new moon. Pitru Paksha is a way to show gratitude to the departed souls belonging to the biological lineage for what they have done for their family and loved ones. Further, people offer prayers to their ancestors by following proper rituals.

Significance of Pitru Paksha 2025

Pitru paksha holds great significance in the Hindu culture. People pay homage and respect to their ancestors and other elderly departed souls of the family every year. According to the Hindu Panchang, Shradha is observed in the period of Chaturmas. It is believed that the departed souls wander around in the universe to seek salvation. Thus, people perform proper rituals to ensure the peaceful afterlife of these souls and seek their blessings in return. Shradha is a way of paying all the due respect to the ancestors who no longer exist in this world.

In the time frame of 16 days of Pitru Paksha people should make every effort to keep the departed souls of their ancestors happy & contented. They must ensure that there are no hindrances in this process as it is very important for the smooth journey of the departed souls to heaven. 

Moreover, the significance of Pitru Paksha or Shraadh is clearly mentioned in the Hindu holy scriptures like Vayu Puran, Garuda Purana, Agni Puran, etc. This is one of the longstanding traditions in the culture which is carried out in the memory of elderly departed souls. 

According to the Garuda Purana, Ancestors are appeased during the 1st half of the dark fortnight. The ancestors in return shower the family members with good health, wealth, longevity, and much more. People who do not engage themselves in these spiritual activities are believed to be trapped in the vicious circle of Maya.

Rituals During Pitru Paksha 2025

The occasion of Pitru Paksha is all about paying homage and due respect to the ancestors of the same biological lineage. The rituals during the Shraaddh are performed on the tithi of the ancestor’s death. People performing Shradh must wake up early and dress up neatly after taking a bath. Moreover, they must wear a ring made up of darbha grass. Make sure that the place of worship is calm and neat. The person doing the Puja should wear a sacred thread. 

Though the rituals during the Pitru Paksha or Shraaddh may vary across the country, Pind daan is the common ritual. In the Pind daan, the favorite food of the departed soul is prepared by following a sattvic recipe. The food is then fed to dogs, crows, ants, cows, and other organisms. The ritual is concluded by offering food to the Brahmins in the form of Dakshina.
