Hartalika Teej - History and Importance.
Hartalika Teej is celebrated to show respect for goddess Parvati’s dedication to getting married to Lord Shiva. Hindu women observe fast on Hartalika Teej, which is known as the Hartalika Teej Vrat. It is said that this Teej vrat attracts blessings and a soul-mate. This vrat is commonly observed for matrimonial bliss.
Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha
Like all the Hindu festivals, even Hartalika Teej has historical importance and is observed as a sign of respect to their gods. Literally translated, Hartalika means ‘ abducted by a friend. This is how the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha goes. Goddess Parvati, who is also known as the daughter of the mountains, was to marry Lord Vishnu because of her father’s will. She did not agree with his decision as her heart was stuck to Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati’s friend took her deep into the forest and hid her so that she didn’t have to marry against her will. On the third day, Goddess Parvati created a magnificent Shivalinga with just her hair and a few leaves. This is what impressed Lord Shiva and he decided to marry her. They were happily married with her father’s blessing. To mark this day, the Hindus celebrate Hartalika Teej and observe a fast, known as the Hartalika Teej Vrat and read this Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha. Since then, the day is referred to as Haritalika Teej.
How to go about the Teej Vrat?
Every fast in the Hindu religion is observed for a different cause but the common cause between all the fasts is ‘good health’. It’s not about pleasing God, but about following self-control and showing determination. To know more about which fasts you should and should not observe, talk to an Astrologer.
Usually, nirjala vrat is followed during Hartalika Teej Vrat, which means, you are not supposed to consume food as well as avoid water throughout the day. The day starts with Hartalika Puja, which means worshipping statues of Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is said that this fast brings good fortune and marital bliss your way. It is also observed in the good life of kids and other family members. Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha is also read on this day.
