History Behind Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is considered the oldest festival, possibly predating the Ancient Vedas because the Rig Veda contains hymns in which the Sun is worshiped and rituals similar to those observed in this festival. There is also a mention of these rituals in the Mahabharata, where Draupadi is shown performing similar kinds of rituals. Draupadi and Pandavas followed the rituals of Chhath upon the advice of astute Dhaumya. The worship of the Sun helped Draupadi resolve many of her problems and eventually helped the Pandavas reclaim their kingdom. It is believed that this festival has a scientific or yogic history dating back to the Vedic period when scholars or rishis used to absorb the sun's energy in order to remain without food. Chhath Method was the name given to this method. As well as fasting and offering puja to the Sun, some ancient texts suggest Lord Rama and Sita held a coronation during the Shukla Paksha in Kartika a month after their return from exile.
