Khalsa Panth and Baisakhi

Sikhs who have undertaken the Amrit Sanskar or baptism process are members of the Khalsa Panth or Khalsa. On the occasion of Baisakhi in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh - the 10th Sikh Guru, established the Khalsa Panth. The Khalsa was founded to preserve the principles of bravery, selflessness, and brotherhood and to safeguard the Sikh community against repression and discrimination.

An important occasion in Sikhism's history was the ceremony of Khalsa initiation. Furthermore, it was a breakthrough in the Sikh community's evolution. Guru Gobind Singh summoned five volunteers from the public on the day of Baisakhi in 1699, eager to give up their lives in the service of righteousness. Thus, the Guru baptized the five volunteers - Panj Pyare, and gave them the title of Singh, meaning lion.

Amrit, a combination of water and sugar, prepared for the baptism ceremony was stirred using a double-edged sword symbolizing the divine powers and the human spirit. After reciting the Sikh prayers and drinking the Amrit from a steel bowl, the Panj Pyare became the Khalsa Panth. The first Khalsa member, Guru Gobind Singh, underwent the ceremony of baptism and received the title of Singh.

In the history of Sikhism, the Khalsa Panth establishment was a significant event and gave a unique identity and sense of purpose to the Sikhs. Five Ks, symbolizing discipline, readiness, and cleanliness, were something that the Khalsa members had to observe. They were:

  • Kesh - uncut hair.
  • Kangha - Comb
  • Kara - Steel bracelet
  • Kachera - Cotton Underwear
  • Kirpan - Sword
