Sita Navami 2024: Why Should Married Women Fast on This Day?

29 Dec, 2023 by Parita Soni

Sita Navami, or Sita Jayanti, is observed as it is the anniversary of the birth of Lord Rama's wife, Goddess Sita. This day is also popularly known as Janki Navami. The devotees celebrate the Sita Navami festival on Shukla Paksha, that is, the period of waxing Moon, on Navami Tithi falling in the month of Vaishakh (in May-June).

An interesting fact related to Navami is that Lord Rama, too, was born on the same Tithi of Navami, the only difference being that the birth anniversary of Lord Rama is known as Rama Navami.

About Sita Navami 2024

When Goddess Sita got abducted by Ravana, she prayed and fasted for the well-being of her husband, Lord Rama. Like every year, Janki Navami 2024 will be celebrated mainly by married women, who fast just the way Goddess Sita did on this day, so their husbands get a prolonged life.

The power of purity of Sita Maiya was so that even after getting imprisoned by Ravana, he couldn't reach or touch her. It is because she constantly chanted and meditated the name of Lord Rama, and the energy created thus could burn anyone approaching her without her consent to death.

Even after so much struggle, when Sita Maiya was rescued, everyone raised the question of her purity, and she had to undergo a test. She was expelled from Ayodhya by Lord Rama because of this. Her remaining life was spent in the forest, where she gave birth to Luv & Kusha. She then called Mother Earth to consume her, so she could return the way she was born.
