WHAT ARE THE AUSPICIOUS HOURS IN A CHOGHADIYA TABLE?

Choghadiya or Chaughadiya essentially translates to ‘four ghadi’ comprising 96 minutes, where each ghadi is of the duration of 24 minutes.

Shubh, Labh, Char, and Amrit are considered auspicious Choghadiya and one should begin all their significant work in these time periods. These 4 Choghadiyas have their own significance. While Shubh time today is an auspicious period for marriages, education, and religious activities, the Labh period is considered suitable for starting new businesses or educational activities. The Amrit period is considered suitable for any sort of work and the Char time period is considered shubh for traveling, dance, or cultural activities.

Rahu Kaal is considered inauspicious Choghadiya and should be avoided for any work. See today's Rahu Kaal.

Frequently Asked Questions

The meaning of Choghadiya is four ghadi which sums up to 96 minutes. 2 words “Chau”, which means four and “ghadi'', which means time duration, combine together to become the word Choghadiya. Choghadiya is also known as “Chaturshtika Muhurat”.

Astrologically, there are seven types of Choghadiya which are repeated from two to three times a day. The twenty hours of a day are divided into 16 time divisions and in these divisions, each Choghadiya appears at least two times and even three times. There are seven good and bad Choghadiya astrologically.

  • Udveg Choghadiya – Ruled by the planet Sun, Udveg is the first Muhurat that is considered inauspicious. However, for government-related works, it yields fruitful results.
  • Labh Choghadiya – Labh is the second Choghadiya that is ruled by planet Mercury. This duration is considered auspicious and is very appropriate to begin any commercial or educational related work.
  • Char Choghadiya – Ruled by Venus, Char is the third Choghadiya that is considered a Shubh Muhurat for travel purposes.
  • Rog Choghadiya – The fourth Muhurat of Choghadiya, Rog is ruled by Planet Mars. In this inauspicious time, one should not begin any good work or take medical consultation.
  • Shubh Choghadiya - Shubh Choghadiya is ruled by planet Jupiter and is considered very auspicious for performing any task. Marriages, Puja, Yagya, and other religious activities can be performed during this time.
  • Kaal Choghadiya – Kaal is an inauspicious Choghadiya that is ruled by the malefic planet Saturn. However, for wealth accumulation, this period is considered a Shubh Muhurat.
  • Amrit Choghadiya – The last Muhurat of Choghadiya is ruled by the Moon. This is the most auspicious time of the day. Any work commenced in this duration yields positive outcomes.
Today’s Shubh Muhurat or “Aaj ka Shubh Samay” can be calculated by analyzing the planetary positions. One should always start any auspicious work like marriages, pujas, inaugurations, or starting a business after knowing about the Shubh Muhurat. There can be many Muhurats in a month or there are chances that there won’t be a single Shubh Muhurat in a day. On the other hand, Choghadiya shares the information about the auspicious time or Shubh Muhurat in a day. Choghadiya comes every day and divides a day into 8 parts consisting of Shubh Muhurat and Ashubh Muhurat.
As per Astrology, Rahu Kaal, Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, or Kaal Ratri should be avoided for any auspicious work. If these inauspicious periods coincide with the most auspicious Choghadiya Muhurat, it is always better to postpone your work.
People often confuse night Choghadiya with the night-time period which is Kaal Ratri. Kaal Ratri is the Labh Choghadiya which is considered inauspicious. However, the night Choghadiya is simply the time between sunset and the next day's sunrise which is further divided into eight auspicious and inauspicious Muhurats. Hence, night Choghadiya can be good or bad depending on the Muhurat you are considering at a particular time.
