Phalguna Amavasya Meaning & Katha

Maharishi Durvasa was once enraged by Indra Dev as well as all other Gods, and cursed them. He condemned them that they become weak and get in danger. The demons, as soon as they learnt about it, took the benefit of it and conquered the Gods. The Gods, upset by all this, went to Lord Vishnu and narrated all that happened.

After understanding the situation, Lord Vishnu asked to keep peace with Demons and also asked the Gods to persuade them to churn the ocean together. He further asked them to inform the Demons that the nectar of immortality thus obtained can be divided amongst both the partakers. The Gods did so, and the churning of the ocean began.

However, as soon as the nectar was located, Jayant (Indradev's son) snatched the Kalash containing nectar and flew away. Thus, the war between both - the Gods and the Demons began and lasted for twelve days. During this period, the drops of nectar fell on Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nashik. While the war was going on, the Sun, Moon, Guru and Shani protected the nectar.

To put an end to the war, Lord Vishnu endured the form of Mohini, the attractive woman whose job was to distribute the nectar of immortality amidst Gods and Demons. As Mohini started to lend it to all, she tricked the demons and presented the entire nectar to the Gods. As during the war, the nectar fell off at the mentioned sacred places, on the day of Phalguni Amavasya, taking a dip in the holy rivers is said to be much auspicious.
