The Hindus celebrate Mauni Amavasya all around the globe. On the Mauni Amavasya date, many devotees stay at the place where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet, also known as the bank of the Triveni Sangam, in Prayagraj.

Mauni Amavasya Significance lies in the fact that taking a bath in the Triveni Sangam and offering true, heartfelt devotion to Lord Vishnu would result in a long, happy, and healthy life. Thousands and lakhs of pilgrims arrive at the Maha Kumbh Mela on the Maghi Amavasya.

Story behind Maghi Amavasya

A Brahmin named Devaswami lived with his wife Dhanvati, his sons, and his honest and ethical daughter, in Kanchipuri. The story is about the time when his daughter remains unmarried, but all his sons get married. His search for a groom eligible for his daughter grew and he handed over the Kundali of his daughter to his eldest son and asked him to visit the city in search of an appropriate groom.

When Devaswami’s eldest son visited an expert astrologer and showed the Kundali of his sister, he said that his sister's charts say that she will become a widow after marriage. The eldest son told his father about the horoscope prediction. Hearing this, Devaswami, worried, asked the astrologer for the remedy.

The astrologer suggested his daughter's dosha from the horoscope can be removed if a washerwoman Soma in Sinhaladweep conducts a special puja at their house. But he shall need to visit her and request for it. To reach Soma's house, Devswami needed to cross the ocean, which made him hungry, tired, and thirsty. He thus thought of taking some rest under a banyan tree.

A vulture's family lived on that tree. Seeing Devaswami stressed, the vulture asked him about the reason for his worry. Devswami narrated the entire story to the vulture's family and in return, it ensured to guide him throughout the journey to Soma's house.

Soma agreed and came along with Devaswami, to his house. She performed the puja as per the rituals. Then, his daughter Gunvati got married. However, even after performing the pooja, his husband died.

Soma was a kind soul, and when she came to know this, she granted all her good deeds to Gunvati. Gunvati’s husband got back his life and Soma returned to Sinhaladweep. When she reached her house, she saw that her husband, son, and son-in-law died as she had granted all her virtues to Gunvati. Deeply saddened, she sat under a peepal tree near the bank of the river and started worshiping Lord Vishnu. She also circumambulated the peepal tree 108 times.

Lord Vishnu, delighted with her dedicated worship, gave back the lives of her husband, her son and her son-in-law. Since then, devotees fast on Mauni Amavasya.
