Origin of Kumbh Mela

In Mythology, it is mentioned that Deva and Asura were fighting with each other to get the elixir, or Amrit from the divine Physician Dhanvantri God. To keep it protected, this was hidden in the river. This episode where they fight with each other is called Samundra Manthan. When Lord Vishnu was traveling with this pitcher of Amrit, four drops of this elixir dropped in four different locations in India, it took the Lord to reach its destination 12 days, which is believed to be cosmic, and on earth, it would be 12 years, so this is the reason Kumbh Mela happens every 12 years.

The locations where these drops were found are said to be sacred, especially during Kumbh Mela. You will see that this event is organized at the bank of the river, where people bathe and find salvation, or Moksha, from their sins or materialistic desires. The main four locations are as below.
