Origin, Meaning, and Significance of Bhai Dooj

Hindus in India, Nepal, and other nations commemorate Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhai Phonta, on the second lunar day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Kartika month of the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar. The event occurs on the final day of the five-day Diwali or Tihar festival celebrations. In the southern portions of India, it is also known as "Yama Dwitiya."

There are many mythological tales based on Hinduism that explain how this lucky day came to be. According to a myth, after defeating the demon Narkasur, Lord Krishna went to see his sister Subhadra. He was warmly welcomed by her sister, who also added flowers and treats to make the event extra special. The celebration of "Bhai Dooj" originated with Subhadra applying the ceremonial "tilak" to the forehead of her brother, Krishna.

Yama, the God of Death, and his sister the Yamuna are central to different mythology. On Dwitiya, the second day following the new moon, it is thought he met his beloved sister. As a result, the occasion started to be observed as "Yamadwitheya" or "Yamadvitiya" throughout the nation on that day.

The Bhai Dooj festival has a literal meaning that goes along with it. It consists of two words: "Bhai," which means "brother," and "Dooj," which refers to the day it is celebrated, which is the second day after the new moon.

A brother and sister's lives are significantly impacted by the day. It is a fortunate occasion that honors the close relationship between siblings. Sisters will often invite their brothers over and cook their favorite meals for them. Sisters likewise ask God for their brothers' protection from all ills and misfortune so that they may live long and prosper. In exchange, brothers care for and love their sisters as is expected of them.

Rituals of Bhai Dooj

These rituals are followed on the day of Bhai Dooj, which is 2 days after Diwali. If you are planning to perform puja on the date of Bhai Dooj then this will come in handy.

The festival of Bhai Dooj represents the bond between a brother and a sister. Sisters without brothers in the states of Maharashtra and Haryana worship the moon. In several regions of the nation, it is customary for women to decorate palms with lovely Mehndi patterns.

A brother visits his sister on this special day, and she cordially welcomes him with an Arti thali, a plate adorned with a glowing lamp, flowers, and sweets. On her brother's forehead, she places a Tilak. A younger brother will touch his sister's feet to express respect and ask for blessings. She then gives him delicious homemade savories. After the Tilak, cash, betel nuts, and flowers are frequently placed in the brother's hand. The siblings buy gifts for each other.

However, the ceremony may vary according to where you are. Sisters may adore coconut and give it to their brothers in some cultures. In West Bengal, Tilak is additionally applied with kajal and sandalwood paste. According to South Indian custom, a light is lit and positioned facing south while chanting slokas or mantras, writing "Kallava" or "Mauli" on the brother's right wrist, and dousing his hands with water. On this important day, different delicacies are prepared according to regional customs. On Bhai Dooj, sweet foods like basundi puri are prepared in Maharashtra, whilst the main dish in Bengal is a sweet snack called khaja.

Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj are two festivals that are very similar. It is an auspicious day for friends and family to get together.
