10 Jan, 2024 by Parita Soni

Amalaki Ekadashi is a Hindu festival observed on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha of Phalguna month (February - March). This day is also known as Amla Ekadashi, as on this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu in the form of the Amla Tree (gooseberry). Amla holds much importance as per mythology, as it is believed that Lord Vishnu created the Amla Tree on the same day he gave birth to Lord Brahma to create the universe.

It is said that in each part of the Amla tree Lord Vishnu resides, hence devotees worship this tree as per Amalaki Ekadashi Puja Vidhi after they observe the fast. The festival celebrates the virtue of truthfulness, and its main rituals include fasting, praying, and reciting sacred verses. It is believed that observing this fast helps to get rid of all problems, purifies the soul, and attain salvation.

Amalaki Ekadashi Story 1

To create the universe, it is said in the Mythological tales that Lord Vishnu gave birth to Lord Brahma from his navel. One day, Lord Brahma desired to truly know himself and all about his existence. So he started meditating intensely and passionately in the name of Parabrahma, Lord Shri Vishnu.

When Lord Brahma saw Parabrahma, he immediately began to cry, and his tears fell on the feet of Lord Vishnu, turning them into an amla tree. When Lord Shri Hari Vishnu saw this, he declared that this tree shall be extremely dear to me. Moreover, any devotee who worships this tree on the day of the Amalaki Ekadashi will achieve salvation and become free from all sins.

Amalaki Ekadashi Story 2

Another Amalaki Ekadashi vrat katha is connected with Chitrasena, a king who was a passionate follower of Lord Vishnu. He used to observe the Amla Ekadashi fast and therefore was blessed by Lord Vishnu. When he once went hunting with his troop, the tribal men caught him. The king and his warriors were abducted and taken prisoner.

As part of their ritual, they agreed to sacrifice the King's life to please their deity. The King fell unconscious at that point and passed out. Suddenly, a ray of light emerged from his body, and all the tribal men got killed.
