Formation of Kanakadhara Stotram

According to the legends, here is how Kanakadhara Stotram is formed:

In Kaliyuga, around 796-798 CE, there was Adi Shankaracharya. He was born in Kerala in around 788CE and said to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. Due to a boon, he has a short life of 32 years, but in these years, he established 4 (four) ashrams across India and 4 disciples to teach Advaita. During his Brahmachari Bhikshatana, he visited a poor Brahmin lady’s house. She had nothing to offer, no fruits, no grains or not even water. She was so in sorrow, keeping dedication in her heart, she offered a single dried gooseberry or Amla in the bowl of Adi Shankaracharya. Impressed by her dedication and devotion, Adi Shankaracharya invokes Mahalakshmi through Kanakadhara Stotram. He recited 21 shlokas in praise of Mahalaxmi. Pleased by Kanakadhara Stotram, Mahalaxmi appeared in front of both and asked the reason behind his recitations and prayers.

Then Adi Shankaracharya pleaded to Mahalaxmi to grant wealth to that Brahmin lady. Mahalaxmi, in reply, said that “the Brahmin lady is not qualified or eligible to get any wealth because of her past life karma”- and denied his request. On this, Adi Shankracharya explained that despite being poor and having nothing, she offers a dried Amla with so much dedication and devotion. This is the act in which she is eligible to deserve wealth. Mahalaxmi listened to this with patience and was surprised by the act of that old lady and golden amla began to rain on her house that washed away all her poverty with this divine blessing.

From that day, this Stotram was one of the most powerful prayers to Mahalaxmi for removing financial obstacles and attracting prosperity.
